Fire at Barry Conservative Club - Statement

Following on from the fire at the Barry Conservative Club please see our statement from Matthew Davies, Hafod's Director of Development:

“We are sad to confirm that a fire seriously damaged the former Barry Conservative Club on Station Street in Barry last night.

South Wales Fire and Rescue did a sterling job, with over 40 firefighters working through the night and this morning to tackle the blaze to ensure the safety of local residents.

The building had been derelict since 2014 and was due to be demolished and redeveloped by Hafod following planning approval in 2016 to build 21 new homes. Timescales for the redevelopment had not been finalised as these were dependent on funding. These plans will not be affected by the fire.

Following a site meeting with South Wales Fire Service and the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Building Control team this morning the building has been deemed unsafe. Therefore it will be demolished as soon as it is safe to do so to ensure the safety of residents and the public.

We will deliver an update to residents in the immediate vicinity today along with contact details should they have any queries or concerns.

We are awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the fire.”
